Namkaran is the naming ceremony, one of the sixteen samskaras. After prayers, the parents announce the child's name to the family. Many families build the name on the syllable linked to the birth nakshatra.

- Priests often help choose a name from the birth nakshatra, so the name is in harmony with the child's birth star.

- Traditionally in the first two weeks after birth, with the 10th, 11th and 12th day all named in the texts.
- Weekdays usually preferred: Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday.
- Nakshatras often chosen include Ashwini, Mrigashira, Pushya, Hasta, Anuradha.
- The exact date and time come from the panchang for your city, so ask your priest or astrologer to confirm.
