• The Maha Mrityunjaya mantra is the Rigveda's prayer to Lord Shiva for protection, healing and a long, healthy life.
• Families arrange it for a relative who is unwell, on a birthday, or before a major treatment, and offer it with faith alongside the care of their doctors.
• Shiva is Mrityunjaya, the conqueror of death, and the chanting is offered to receive his grace, courage and peace of mind.

• Mondays, Pradosh (the 13th lunar day), Maha Shivratri and the month of Shravan are favoured for Shiva worship.
• Many families also choose a birthday or a day a doctor or astrologer suggests.

વિધિ સંક્ષેપમાં

1. The family or the priest states the sankalp: the name, gotra and purpose of the jaap.
2. Ganesha is invoked first so the rite proceeds without obstacle.
3. A kalash is set up and Shiva is invoked.
4. The mantra is chanted the agreed number of times. Counts differ widely between packages.
5. A havan with ghee and samagri usually closes the jaap.
6. Aarti is offered and prasad is shared.

ॐ त्र्यम्बकं यजामहे सुगन्धिं पुष्टिवर्धनम् । उर्वारुकमिव बन्धनान्मृत्योर्मुक्षीय माऽमृतात् ॥

Om tryambakaṁ yajāmahe sugandhiṁ puṣṭivardhanam | urvārukamiva bandhanān mṛtyor mukṣīya mā 'mṛtāt ||

We worship the three-eyed one, fragrant and nourishing. Like a cucumber from its stem, may I be freed from death, not from immortality.
