Naamkaran (naming ceremony) is one of the 16 Samskaras in Hindu tradition. The baby is officially given its name in a religious ceremony, ideally between the 11th and 41st day after birth. The name is traditionally chosen based on the birth nakshatra's first syllable according to Vedic Jyotish.

Naamkaran is traditionally performed on the 11th day (Ekadashaha) after the baby's birth, or on the 101st day. If the 11th day is inauspicious, a nearby auspicious muhurta is chosen.
The baby's birth nakshatra determines the first syllable of the name. Each nakshatra has four padas (quarters), each with a specific Sanskrit syllable. For example, Ashwini Nakshatra's syllables are Chu, Che, Cho, La. The baby's name should ideally begin with the syllable corresponding to its birth nakshatra's pada.
