Upanayana Muhurta is the auspicious time selected for the Upanayana Samskara — the sacred thread ceremony that marks a boy's formal initiation into the Vedic educational tradition and the wearing of the Yajnopavita (sacred thread). This is the 10th of the 16 Samskaras and is one of the most important initiations in the Brahminical and Kshatriya traditions. The correct muhurta is considered essential for the child's educational, intellectual, and dharmic development.

Pushya nakshatra is considered the most auspicious for Upanayana Samskara, as it is Jupiter's nakshatra and carries the quality of nourishment of knowledge and the guru-disciple relationship. Shravana (learning through transmission), Uttara Phalguni (formal dharmic initiation), and Hasta are also excellent choices.
Classical texts recommend Upanayana at age 8 for Brahmin boys, age 11 for Kshatriya boys, and age 12 for Vaishya boys. Modern practice varies widely and is often performed earlier or later based on family tradition and individual readiness. The Vedic tradition emphasises the initiation is ready when both the guru and the family are ready, not at a rigidly fixed age.
Yajnopavita (also spelled Janoi or Janeyu) is the sacred thread worn across the body after Upanayana. It consists of three strands representing the three debts (Rishi Rina, Deva Rina, Pitru Rina), and its wearing marks the boy's formal entry into the Vedic educational tradition and his commitment to dharma, learning, and ritual purity.
